8 Outstanding Benefits from

Swedish Bitters

World-Famous Formula

If there were ever a perfect example of “a product that is greater than the sum of its parts,” Swedish Bitters would be it. If the word “synergy” truly means anything, then Swedish Bitters stands as one of the most striking and compelling examples.

This is not a product or process that has been patented which may explain why large pharmaceutical corporations around the world have quietly overlooked this remarkable herbal bitter. It remains one of humanity’s great open secrets. The ingredients exactly as recorded by Maria Treben and the legendary herbalists who came before her have been openly published for everyone to see. In fact, if you wish, you can even prepare this formula yourself right in your own kitchen!

Yet in practice, it turns out that the precise proportions, the careful combination, and the preparation process of these familiar herbs create an extract whose power and effectiveness far exceed that of the individual ingredients alone.

And if you would like to prepare it yourself, here is the complete formula—from A to Z:

Swedish Herbs

– Swedish Bitters concentrate –

10 g Aloe
5 g Myrrh
2 g Saffron
10 g Senna Leaves

10 g Camphor
10 g Rhubarb Root
10 g Manna
10 g Venetian Theriac

5 g Carline Thistle Root
10 g Angelica Root
10 g Zedoary Root

This formula was found in the records of the famous Swedish physician, Medical Rector Dr. Samst. He lived to the remarkable age of 104, passing away only as the result of a riding accident. Both his parents and grandparents were known for their exceptional longevity.

Traditional Preparation

Place the entire herbal mixture into a 2-liter wide-neck bottle, then pour 1.5 liters of rye alcohol or fruit brandy with an alcohol content of 38%–40% over the herbs.

Place the bottle in the sunlight or near a warm stove for 14 days, shaking it well each day. Afterward, strain the liquid and pour it into smaller bottles. Seal them tightly and store in a cool place.

The mixture can be stored for many years. In fact, the longer it ages, the more potent it becomes. Shake well before use. You may pour a small portion into a separate bottle for daily use while keeping the remainder sealed in the larger bottle until needed.

Aloe may be replaced with Gentian root or Wormwood powder.

(Use natural camphor only.)

For centuries, Swedish Bitters has traditionally been prepared by macerating herbs in alcohol.

Today, thanks to modern methods, this valuable herbal extract can also be produced without leaving any alcohol residue, an improvement welcomed by many people.

Swedish Bitters is therefore available in two forms:

  • Alcohol-based (up to about 38% alcohol by volume)

  • Alcohol-free

Both forms provide comparable benefits and effectiveness. However, the alcohol-based version should be used with caution by pregnant women, children, individuals with severe liver disease, those with high blood pressure, and by anyone who avoids alcohol for personal or religious reasons.
